Characteristics of PTFE material for hydraulic seals-2

Characteristics of PTFE material for hydraulic seals

The most common sealing materials of hydraulic seals are metal, PTFE, synthetic rubber, and flexible graphite.

PTFE, also known as the king of plastics, have such nickname as Teflon and Devon. This material is resistant to acids, alkalis, and various organic solvents. It is almost insoluble in all solvents. Besides, PTFE has the characteristics of high-temperature resistance. As its friction coefficient is extremely low, it can be used as a lubricant as well as the ideal material for the inner layer of the water pipe.

Characteristics of PTFE:

The PTFE in the hydraulic seal can almost resist the corrosion of all strong acids, alkalis, and strong oxidants; it has a very low friction coefficient and is a good anti-friction, self-lubricating hydraulic seal material.

However, its thermal conductivity is very poor. Therefore, bronze powder, molybdenum disulfide, graphite, etc. can be added to the polytetrafluoroethylene to improve the thermal conductivity and self-lubricating properties of the hydraulic seals.

In addition, the material features a high-temperature resistance and low-temperature resistance with the operating temperature range between -180 °C and +250 °C. It has good water resistance, aging resistance, non-combustibility, toughness and is very easy to process. PTFE rubber seal is commonly made into V shape or O shape.

In addition, other sealing materials such as stainless steel and rubber hydraulic seals can be coated with PTFE to form a composite sealing material hydraulic seal or rubber seal. As they combine the advantages of different types of sealing materials, they turn out to have a better sealing effect.
